Shooting this travel story for The New York Times Magazine was a great experience. As a Chicago transplant, I make my way around the city just about everyday, but this time I got to really appreciate Chicago through the eyes of a tourist.
At the end of last month I took a few days to explore a part of the country I had never seen been. Although I had been to two Hawaiian islands before, this was my first trip to the Big Island, and it was bigger than I expected. Circumnavigating the volcanic isle took hours and the winding roads lead to long hikes like the one to a green sand beach and a midnight treacherous trek across a rocky expanse that led to an expansion on our 50th state.
I used to hate taking photos while on vacation, but as I have gotten older I have found it almost therapeutic to capture these moments, even if for no other reason than populating my computers wallpaper slideshow.
People have been asking why I have been so quiet lately… well I went on vacation… well sort of. I just returned from 9 days in San Francisco where I worked on a corporate documentary film for three days and then vacationed. Here is a selection of some of the fun pics I took while seeing the sights. It was really nice to just take pictures for fun and not strive for perfection.
