Shooting this travel story for The New York Times Magazine was a great experience. As a Chicago transplant, I make my way around the city just about everyday, but this time I got to really appreciate Chicago through the eyes of a tourist.
I love it when an assignment not only gives me an opportunity to do what I love â€“ shoot environmental portraits â€“ but it gives new insights about the city I call home.
When the New York Times magazine asked me to shoot a series of images showcasing Chicago bars and bartenders I was shown five great places to tie one on, all with a unique knot.

I worked together with Marcus Matteo to come up with his evocative album artwork for his new single â€˜I donâ€™t wanna go to work today.â€™ Most of it was his ideaâ€¦. but my contribution was tweaking the pose and adding the keys. All in all Im really happy with the final results.
I got hired today to take some photos of Chicago stuck in our seasonal deep freeze. For my friends in the west, its been around 10-degrees, which I am sure seems frightening to you. To my friends in the Midwest, its just another day in Paradise 😉
The image above is my favorite from today. I didn’t see this image at first as I was drawn to the juxtaposition of the iced over ladder and the city skyline. While I look confused at the footprints headed towards the water, I noticed the reflection.
