The New York Times published a story this morning, which included one of my photos, about mutual fund managers. I also shot this image on the same assignment. I was blown away at the opulence of their offices, located just off of Chicago’s Magnificent mile in a 100-plus year old antique filled mansion. I knew right away when I saw the French room that this is where I had to shoot their portrait.

The drug, a synthetic form of estrogen called DES, or diethylstilbestrol, was prescribed in the 1940s until 1971 under more than a dozen different brand names to pregnant women experiencing everything from miscarriages to nausea. Fast-forward 40 years later, and some of the daughters of those pregnant women are now adult women getting breast cancer at greatly elevated rates.
