A few months ago when civil unions became legal for gay and lesbian couples in Chicago, I decided to start offering my photography services for couples looking to get married. It’s hard to believe that it was seven years ago today that I photographed a protest for marriage equality in Chicago. It seemed like a place as liberal as Illinois would have civil unions in no time at all, but it took until June 2011 for us to have these rights.
Over 30 same-sex couples tied the knot this morning in Chicago’s Millennium Park on the first day for civil unions in Illinois.
I started to tear up this morning… just a little… when I saw Janean Watkins and Lakeesha Harris cry upon receiving their Civil Union License in Chicago this morning. Illinois is now the 6th state to have civil unions or their equivalent.
