Chicago Fitness Model Comp Card Photography: Capturing the Best of Negus Ferguson

I recently completed a Chicago fitness model comp card shoot in my studio for male model Negus Ferguson.

I was inspired by a Calvin Klein ad to use a white shelf across the middle of the frame.. so off to IKEA I went.

The Importance of a Chicago Fitness Model Comp Card

A comp card is a vital tool for models, serving as a visual resume that showcases their versatility and range. For fitness models like Negus, a well-designed comp card can open doors to a variety of opportunities in the industry. It is essential to include different looks and poses that highlight the model’s physique, expressions, and style.

For these shots I used a Chimera strip box over his right shoulder, a Profoto Octabox overhead between me and Negus and I used a standard reflector on a light over his left shoulder.

Creating the Perfect Comp Card for a Chicago Fitness Model

When creating a comp card, it’s important to work with a professional photographer who understands the nuances of lighting, angles, and composition. In Negus’ shoot, we used a combination of natural and artificial lighting to bring out his best features and create a dynamic set of images. The variety of poses and outfits used in the shoot ensured that his comp card would appeal to a broad range of clients.

One of the key elements in creating a compelling comp card is diversity. We aimed to capture different aspects of Negus’ personality and style, from intense, focused looks to more relaxed, approachable expressions. This variety not only showcases his versatility but also makes his comp card more appealing to potential clients who are looking for a fitness model that can fit various roles and projects.

This is Negus' comp card showing him shirtless in underwear looking at the camera. Another image shows him looking off to the side. There are also two images with him wearing a tightly fitted black short sleeve shirt and finally one in a gray suit.
I like how all of these images play well together on the comp card.

Technical Aspects of Comp Card Photography for Chicago Fitness Models

The technical aspects of comp card photography cannot be overlooked. Lighting, for instance, plays a crucial role in highlighting the model’s features and creating the desired mood for each shot. For Negus’ shoot, we used a combination of a Chimera strip box over his right shoulder, a Profoto Octabox overhead between me and Negus, and a standard reflector on a light over his left shoulder. This setup helped us achieve the perfect balance of shadows and highlights, giving each image depth and dimension.

Another important factor is the choice of backgrounds and props. For Negus’ shoot, we kept the background simple and clean to keep the focus on him. The white shelf from IKEA added a modern touch and helped frame the shots nicely. The simplicity of the setup ensured that nothing distracted from Negus’ impressive physique and expressive poses.

Styling and Wardrobe Choices for Fitness Models in Chicago

Wardrobe and styling are essential components of any comp card shoot. For fitness models, it’s important to showcase their physique in a variety of outfits that highlight their muscles and fitness levels. In Negus’ shoot, we opted for classic black underwear to keep the focus on his body. We also included images of him in a tightly fitted black short sleeve shirt and a gray suit to show his versatility and ability to pull off different looks.

Makeup is equally important. Even for male models, a bit of grooming can go a long way in ensuring they look their best. For those interested, we offer on-site hair and makeup services to ensure every detail is perfect. This can be particularly useful for fitness models who need to look their absolute best for every shot.
