Chicago Magazine Photographer:

Shooting this travel story for The New York Times Magazine was a great experience. As a Chicago transplant, I make my way around the city just about everyday, but this time I got to really appreciate Chicago through the eyes of a tourist. Not only did I learn some cool and new things about the city which I have lived in for 10 years, (including finding a great bar near my house to visit in the future), I discovered some great places I can take my family the next time they visit and some places to just enjoy through out the year. When you’re playing host you might not think about how cool something as simple as visiting the Chicago Cultural Center dome might be for a tourist. Needless to say this story has ignited a spark in me to explore deeper into the city so I can see what else I can discover!

By Freda Moon
The New York Times
Chicago is a city that changes noticeably with the seasons. It is endlessly beautiful in the warm months, when the sidewalks transform into cafes, the Lakefront Trail becomes a Divvy Bike highway and the beaches along Lake Michigan might be mistaken for Miami. As the temperatures fall, the city changes from a playground to a cultural promised land – a place of fine and varied food, inventive theater and one of the country’s great live music scenes. From the historic high-rises of the Gold Coast to regal Hyde Park, from Bronzeville to Boystown, from the Indian and Puerto Rican enclaves of Devon Avenue and Humboldt Park, respectively, to the bohemian barrios of Logan Square and Pilsen, Chicago demands hard choices. It rarely disappoints… Read More

At the end of last month I took a few days to explore a part of the country I had never seen been. Although I had been to two Hawaiian islands before, this was my first trip to the Big Island, and it was bigger than I expected. Circumnavigating the volcanic isle took hours and the winding roads lead to long hikes like the one to a green sand beach and a midnight treacherous trek across a rocky expanse that led to an expansion on our 50th state.

I had no idea that seeing lava flowing into the ocean would require walking 6 miles over rough terrain. Even thought we looked like dorks thanks to these headlamps, we had to navigate in pitch black for over two hours by listening for the ocean, keeping it close to our left. A few times we got too close and almost fell off a cliff! Our walk back was a lot easier thanks to the moon rise.

I used to hate taking photos while on vacation, but as I have gotten older I have found it almost therapeutic to capture these moments, even if for no other reason than populating my computers wallpaper slideshow.

Whether it was exploring China’s Forbidden City, or fashioning a tripod out of wallets and phones in Seattle to take the photo above, I’m always moving through my adventures looking to add some icons to my photo album.

Apparently, I’m a giant! Either that or people in China are really short.

You can make a tripod out of anything.

I’m doing what I love, it’s something I’m drawn to and I can’t turn if off. Everywhere I go I see compositions and light, causing my mind to wonder off into the possibilities. My musical friends say the world is their symphony and every footstep a new beat. Their crescendos and my compositions stem from the same source: passion.
